Do You Need an App? Website, Web App or Native
Many small businesses ask for an app when what they need is a fast, well-built website. Decide by what customers will do, not by what competitors have.
Start with the job
Write down what customers need to do: book, order, pay, check a status, get reminded. If they do it once or twice a year, a website is usually enough. If they do it every week, an installed app begins to make sense.
The three options
- Responsive website. Works on every device, found through search, no installation.
- Progressive web app. A progressive web app is a web app that can be installed on a device and behave like a standalone application, with some offline support.
- Native app. Built for each platform, with full access to device features and a place in the app stores.
When native is worth it
- Heavy use of camera, Bluetooth, background location or other device features.
- Frequent, repeat use where an icon on the home screen matters.
- Offline work as a core requirement.
The hidden cost
An app is not finished at launch. Operating system updates, store policy changes and security fixes mean ongoing work. Budget for maintenance from the start, or choose the web.
